Theresa Marshall was born in sunny Biloxi, Mississippi. Her parents were young Christians who led the youth group at their church, so Theresa grew up with lots of older brothers and sisters. She still remembers with affection the warm nights and playing outside in the rain. All that changed when her family moved up to the frozen tundra called Indiana. Her dad became a pastor of a small country church in Walton, Indiana. Theresa took a missions trip to Brazil when she was 16, and she fell in love with the Latin people and culture. Her parents wanted her to go to Bible college for at least a year, so when she graduated from high school, she went to Grace Bible College.
Jonathan Marshall grew up in a little town in Wisconsin. The town happened to be named Marshall. (His dad always liked saying, "Marshall from Marshall.") He grew up in a strong Christian home. His parents always were involved in ministry. Both of his parents and his sister went to Grace Bible College, so it was expected that he should go for at least one year. Jon went and fell in love with the sports program. He also started to really enjoy the teachings of the professors. Grace was the place where he really dedicated his mind to the Grace message.
Jon and Theresa met at Grace Bible College (Jon was a year ahead of Theresa). It wasn't love at first sight, but it was love by the third date. Jon took a summer trip to Alaska, and when he returned, they were engaged. In May of 1991, they were married (and lived happily ever after!).
Both Jon and Theresa had made a decision to follow God no matter where, when, or how. It seemed to both of them that God was silent for many years. They were working in a church doing music and youth group. Theresa was teaching piano, and Jon was working towards a physician assistant degree. The summer of 1996 was a turning point for both of them. Jon had the summer off before he would be heading into serious medical training. They had talked about the possibility of going on a short-term missions trip, so they talked with Dr. Sam Vinton at Grace Ministries International about the possibilities. Dr. Sam thought of two different locations: Bolivia and Puerto Rico. They had already been to Puerto Rico on vacations to see Theresa's parents. Jon was thinking Bolivia because of snakes and spiders but the mission decided that Puerto Rico was where they needed to be.
While in Puerto Rico, God opened their eyes to what He had been doing in preparing them to go to Puerto Rico. All the things that they had been involved in were things that they would do in Puerto Rico.
They have three children: Benjamin, Elizabeth, and Logan. God is great!! He has changed their focus and sent them in a new direction. Jon is now the camp director, and they are both very excited to see what God has for them in the future!
