Joanne's late husband, Carl, was born into a Christian family living in eastern Pennsylvania in 1934, and by the age of ten, he was already sure of God's call to Africa. Joanne was born in the Belgian Congo to Rev. and Mrs. Otto Deming who were among the first Grace missionaries ever to serve on a foreign field.
Carl and Joanne worked in Tanzania from 1962 to 2002. They taught full time at Tanzania Bible Institute. Joanne was involved in the medical work and the maternity clinic. She also trained many Tanzanian women as midwives. Carl was involved in maintenance and evangelistic work, as well as teaching short-term Bible School courses. They also held marriage seminars and health and nutrition seminars.
In early 2002, they moved to Zambia to begin ministering with their son, Dan, and his wife, Tina. Until Carl went home to be with the Lord on January 30, 2010, they continued to hold seminars and also teach courses at Zambia Bible Institute. They were also involved with a new English-speaking church.
Joanne now plans to continue ministering on the field alongside our other GMI missionaries.
