Fred and Karen Vinton
Fred and Karen Vinton have been serving with Grace Ministries International in Africa for the past 20 years
They have two daughters and a son.
From 1989 to 1998, Fred and Karen worked in the village of Kipaka in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (then called Zaire). Responding to the great health care needs of the area, Fred started a medical clinic known as Kipaka Grace Medical Center. Karen took care of their girls and produced Swahili-language tracts and teaching materials.
Congo's civil war (1998-2003) forced the family to relocate to Mumba, Tanzania. For three years, Karen homeschooled the children while Fred taught at Tanzania Grace Bible Institute and in local churches. Much of his teaching was based on a Bible curriculum called Building on Firm Foundations developed by New Tribes Mission for use among tribal peoples. Fred's work in translating and adapting this curriculum for the African context continues to bear fruit in Tanzania today.
In 2003, the Vintons returned to Congo. Fred served as administrator of Kipaka Grace Medical Center, now an 80-bed hospital serving a rural population of 200,000, while training Congolese hospital staff and overseeing renovations and expansion of the hospital buildings. In addition, Fred taught seminars for church leaders and laymen focused on the doctrine of salvation and principles of evangelism. Karen continued homeschooling, produced teaching materials in Swahili, and held a weekly children's Bible club.
Currently, the Vintons are living in Pasadena, California where Fred is working on a master's degree at Fuller Theological Seminary. His purpose in these studies is to reflect thoughtfully on his past experiences and to enhance his effectiveness in evangelism, Bible teaching, and pastoral training. Kipaka Grace Medical Center continues to serve its community under dedicated Congolese leadership.
