Alvaro and Mauren Barrantes
Mauren was born in a Christan home and at a young age she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She attended the church Iglesia Bíblica de la Gracia in Belén, Costa Rica, and always had a passion for missions. She got involved in different leadership positions at church and had the opportunity to go on short-term mission trips to the United States and Puerto Rico. Alvaro and Mauren met each other in 2002 when they were coworkers at the same company. Mauren invited Alvaro to come to church and it was there that he came to know the Lord.
In 2006, they got married and today they have three beautiful kids: Josué, Sofia, and Elisa. Their three kids came after the tragic loss of their very first child in 2007. This was a very hard time for them but it was through this difficult time that Alvaro felt a new depth of the love of God. He felt that God was calling him to teach others about this amazing love, so he and Mauren began to take steps toward mission work. They started to get more involved in their church, being the full-time youth leaders, and they also started taking missions classes. Alvaro signed up for classes at the Bible Institute and is almost done with his degree in pastoral studies. He also is currently the head of the missions committee and part of the pastoral team at Iglesia Biblica de la Gracia. Mauren has taken an active role in the worship team and helps lead worship on Sundays.
Three years ago the local missions committee at Iglesia Biblica de la Gracia started exploring new areas for mission fields. Panama was one of the locations that the church chose since it is a bordering country and they want to start a church plant in Chiriquí. Alvaro and Mauren and their three kids are planning to move to Panama to be the people to head up this new church plant of Grace Ministries International.
